100 Word Challenge – Blend

October 9, 2008 at 3:47 am (Uncategorized)

Velvet Verbosity brings us the 100 word challenge. This week’s word is “blend”.

Music fills the house and the walls reverberate with laughter. In the back room the boys play off each other, encouraging each to higher levels of silliness. She soaks in the chaos as the giggles intensify until the boys are bent double with their own hilarity. She smiles over their heads at the ringleader, nodding at the clock. Reluctantly he switches back to adult mode and herds the younger ones to bed before returning to wrap his arms around her. Contently they listen to whispers and muffled giggles seep through the door from their blended family and know they’re blessed.

The woman gently blows dust from the book as her daughter watched in quiet anticipation. They snuggled onto the couch and she slowly opened the cover, pointing to the first picture. “This is your Grandma.” The little girl sighs with awe “She was so pretty Mama.” The woman smiles pointing to the next “And that’s your Grandpa.” The little girl giggles. “He has hair!” They  move through the book, each page a tribute to the long happy life. The little girl stands admiring the other binders lining the shelf. “Are these more treasures?” The mother nodded, tears in her eyes.

100 Word Challenge – City

July 10, 2008 at 4:55 pm (100 words)

Another installment of The 100 Word Challenge  brought to you by Velvet Verboisty.  This one was difficult to keep in the parameters.

Beyond the loud crowds is another world. A world where the neighbors sit together, fanning the heavy still air as they laughingly recount the day’s happenings and times past. A smiling stranger offers a bowl of etouffe from her stove as if all were family. Here strains of music can be heard drifting on the air growing until it moves limbs and catches heartstrings and binds every spirit together. Beyond the flashing lights and glittering façade designed to entertain visitors is a beautiful city. Her soul will forever call to those who know her and our souls ache to respond.

100 Words – Hour

July 3, 2008 at 8:59 pm (100 words)

The 100 Word Challenge is sponsored by the dedicated, talented Velvet Verbosity

Sixty minutes

Three thousand six hundred seconds

Each one a chance

Every moment an opportunity

Every tick gives us an option

To live consciously or move carelessly through life

To smile at that stranger, to hold a door, to pause long enough to say good day

Or to rush through the crowd, wrapped in self, selfishly trying to hoard time

To what end, for what purpose

These moments will pass regardless of our intentions or lack of thereof

Each minute, each second can be used in a positive manner

Sixty minutes. Three thousand six hundred seconds. One hour. A lifetime.

100 Words – Plastic

June 4, 2008 at 4:29 pm (100 words)

“Pre-Approved”

“0% APR for the first six months”

“Improve your credit!!!”

Hmm. It would be good to have in an emergency… Oh look! Saks is having a sale…

Credit increase? Well I’ve earned it. And look! Nordstrom’s is having a sale…

Oh that’s cute. Oh that would look great in my house. Oh I want this and that and I NEED that…

What do you mean it’s rejected? Well try this one…what?

Where did all this clutter come from? It’s time to simplify, organize, reduce and reuse. Time to go green. Perhaps I should remove the plastic in my life…

100 Words – Against

May 28, 2008 at 8:20 pm (100 words)

I stir quietly, noticing your warmth along my body and the pressure of your leg intertwined with mine. I move my fingertips slowly across your skin, marveling at the sensation. I lay my head against you, nuzzling into the hollow between your shoulder and neck where I can breathe in your scent until my senses are saturated. Gently I kiss your amazing lips, missing the taste of you but unwilling to disturb your slumber just yet. Here I feel wrapped in your presence; I feel safe. And I smile in wonder at the privilege of awakening with you against me.
